I see that it's been an entire year since I last posted. How could that be? And how could it be that these kids are starting another year of school? I don't have an answer, but here we are with a 6th grader (although he officially starts tomorrow), a 4th grader, a 3rd grader and a kindergartener.

This morning we ventured back into the familiar...
but not quite as familiar as previous years. A new school (building) meant a later start date. A darker morning coupled with rainy skies required inside pictures for our crew instead of the front porch pictures we've done in the past.

I love summer...and seeds and soil and gardens and veggies and farmer's markets. And many times I wish that I lived on a lot of acres so I could have my own giant garden and fields and barns and animals (mostly chickens). And then I remember all the icky stuff that comes along with that wish. Um...I'll just stick with my three 4x4 garden beds and stopping at the farmer's market once a week Beckiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09875624113954896298noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6452689812293667176.post-11629491828928605482016-07-26T00:01:00.001-05:002016-07-26T00:01:48.250-05:00Doctoring and Riding and Being 4
The countdown had been on for this girl to turn 4. For weeks she asked, "How many more days 'til my birfday?" And when I told her a number, I definitely needed to differentiate between her birthDAY and her birthday PARTY, because when you're 4 (or 5 or 6 or 7, I guess) there is no difference between the two. In January this girl turned 7. And she wanted a Wonder Woman party. I was happy to oblige as I'd been planning a Wonder Woman party on Pinterest for at least three years. So when it came time to finalize the details my only limitation was time (as in her party is always right after New Year's Eve, which is right after Christmas, which is right after Jack's birthday, which is right after...you Beckiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09875624113954896298noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6452689812293667176.post-32836235013810667082016-02-07T19:55:00.002-06:002016-02-07T19:55:47.167-06:00Super Bowl 50

A couple weeks ago Wes came home with what was probably my favorite homework assignment to date (and I've seen my fair share of homework assignments). In an effort to get some hands-on experience with measuring cups and spoons, he needed to help prepare a recipe, doing all the measuring himself. Birthday season is upon us and the first celebration happened last weekend as our second turned eight. We started the weekend with a Star Wars movie night, celebrated with family on Saturday and rounded out the weekend with our birthday date. When presented mid-summer with two options for how to spend a week of family vacation - a week at the cabin or a family missions week - the kids overwhelmingly and enthusiastically voted for family missions week. Today marked the fifth first day of school for our family. Three years ago I took this picture.
The next year I took a similar picture, it's just that the kids were older.
It only seemed appropriate that I take another one the following year.
Which brings me to this year. Today I sent my babies off to 4th, 2nd and 1st grades. The littlest one stayed with me and will start preschool Beckiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09875624113954896298noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6452689812293667176.post-71834332840606767682015-07-22T16:24:00.002-05:002015-07-22T16:24:14.344-05:00Lazy Days of Summer?
Today we went to the beach.
The kids had SO much fun.
And that's why I'm writing this.
To remind myself that the whole point was for them to have fun.
I forgot.
Because taking four children to the beach is a lot of work.

There are so many wonderful family traditions that I read about and think, "Oh! We should make that a tradition too." Apple orchards in the fall, maple tapping in the spring, ice skating and sledding in the bitterly cold, blustery, snowy winter, just to name a few. Some we adopt, some we don't, and some we let the kids do on their own while we sit in our warm house sipping hot chocolate.

This girl loves to play Candyland. She calls is "Candy Lion" and for months before she turned three, she told anyone that would listen that she was "gonna be free at my Candy Lion party."

If you have a little girl, chances are it's been a little chilly in your house. So chilly that you've found snowflakes inside and the floors nearly FROZEN over. And you've probably discovered that you have this nagging itch to build a snowman...or at least sing about it. Sound familiar?

Exactly one month after Wesley turned 7, this dear boy turned 9. On (or near) their birthdays, each of the kids gets to spend a day alone with mom and dad doing whatever (within reason, of course) they choose. While this post should've been part of Thankful November because Wesley is one of the people I'm most thankful for, like I often say, "better late than never." So here we go. I have these four friends, for whom I am incredibly thankful. They're known around here as "the girlfriends." The relationships are deep and timeless and I am blessed by the history and future I have with these ladies.
One of them is having her first baby {it's a boy!} and the rest of us had the honor of hosting a baby shower for her today.

Today I am thankful for extra time in the morning with these four blessings. A late start at school meant they got to sleep in and I got to bring them to school.
I asked them for silly faces. This is what I got. Why do the tongues always come out?
Then I asked for a group hug {which quickly turned into wrestling, but you don't need to see that part}
And finally I asked for sad facesBeckiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09875624113954896298noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6452689812293667176.post-85417727940570196152014-11-16T12:52:00.000-06:002014-11-22T22:23:51.621-06:00Thankful November {day 16}

I'll bet you thought I forgot to be thankful. Nope. Just got busy. On {day 4} I was so proud of myself for being only one day behind (that's like being on time for me). Now I'm ten days behind (ten days?!) but I refuse to hang my head in shame for three reasons:

Last winter our kids tracked enough sand into the back entry that we could have made our own beach. One day, less than 24 hours after sweeping the entire entry, I swept up this dustpan full of dirt. Yes, it took less than 24 hours to create all of this. Every other time I'd done this, I finished feeling frustrated at the futility of my effort. It's November. November could possibly be my favorite month of the year. It's the month that begins our celebrating {three birthdays and three holidays packed into two months}. It's the month that culminates in my all time favorite holiday {Thanksgiving, in case you didn't guess}. And it's the month that motivates so many to consider and share all they have to be thankful for.

On a chilly Saturday morning about two weeks ago I started the day as I never had before: I awoke early, donned my running gear and headed out to race in my first 5k. In May when I started running again race day felt so far off. But in the weeks leading up to it, I began to wonder if a summer's worth of training was enough.
Turns out it was, and I finished my first ever 5k with this lovely Beckiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09875624113954896298noreply@blogger.com0
